World Ocean Day 2026
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform today joined the global community in commemorating World Ocean Day 2026 under the theme, “Reimagine: Beyond the World We Know, A New Relationship With Our Ocean.” Officiating the event, Minister Inge Zaamwani highlighted the ocean’s vital role as the planet’s life-support system, regulating climate, generating over half of the world’s oxygen, sustaining livelihoods, and providing food security for billions. She called on all Namibians to embrace a renewed commitment to protecting marine ecosystems, reducing pollution, and supporting sustainable ocean governance. As Namibia advances conservation initiatives and its Blue Economy agenda, the commemoration served as a reminder that safeguarding our oceans is not only an environmental responsibility but an investment in future generations.
Namibia’s participation underscores the country’s continued commitment to advancing a sustainable ocean economy that promotes economic growth, environmental stewardship, and social inclusion. The meeting brings together Sherpas and technical representatives from member countries to deliberate on key ocean-related priorities, including sustainable fisheries, ocean finance, marine biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and the blue economy agenda. The Sherpa Meeting provides an important platform for member countries to exchange knowledge, strengthen partnerships, and shape collective action toward the sustainable use and protection of ocean resources. Namibia continues to advocate for the sustainable management of marine resources, equitable benefit-sharing, and enhanced international cooperation to unlock the full potential of the ocean economy.
